Seoul Lantern Festival

(Sorry about the posting hiatus; smaller hotel rooms in Japan = laptop out less often!!)

Back in early November we checked out the Seoul Lantern Festival. We had planned to go have a look a couple of times but ditched it, then happened to find ourselves in the area again so followed the crowds down to Cheonggyecheon Stream.

It was similar to the Christchurch Lantern Fest with the lanterns on the water of the stream, but I’d say the lanterns were a bit more impressive. The first section was themed on Seoul youth culture – like buskers, sneakers, retro fashion, a segway (lol), video games, etc. The other lanterns were traditional culture like dragons, animals, palace buildings and people in traditional outfits. And of course Christmassy type lanterns too. There were stalls selling light-up balloons and street food, and the weather was mild so it was a really nice evening to wander along the stream, and the further we went the less people were around. Glad we finally went back to check it out!

We arrived at the perfect time – just after sunset.
Seoul Station lantern
Lantern of Seoul Station, though I’m not sure if technically this building is still used as the station?

A segway lantern! This made me laugh.
sneaker lantern
Giant sneaker – I think it was to represent walking around Seoul, maybe fashion also?
mascot lanterns
Cuties – I think they are the festival’s mascots and they possibly change each year.

Old tram lantern.

You could write a wish on these and float them down stream. They didn’t get far before getting stuck on these rocks though.
sdr
Traditional dudes – maybe guards, King, Queen and court official type people?
dragon Seoul Lantern Festival
One of my favourites – love a good dragon!
