Bongeunsa Temple

Yesterday we visited Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사) – a peaceful oasis in the middle of Seoul. From our apartment in Yeoksam, we walked to Yeoksam Station and caught the Line 2 train to Samseong Station and then walked about 15 minutes around COEX Mall to get to the temple.

Bongeunsa is a Buddhist temple and you can see locals offering their daily prayers – in fact, we didn’t see many other tourists, a nice change from the hordes you get at the big temples in Japan.

We didn’t stay long but my favourite building was the Panjeon, which was built in 1855 and holds over 3000 carved wooden blocks used for printing sutras – yep, that’s right, it’s basically a library!

The temple is on a bit of a slope, so the views are pretty good – plus I love to see the contrast of traditional buildings surrounded by modern skyscrapers. We are here at the start of autumn so the foliage is a beautiful mix of green and orange, and the sky is perfectly blue!

Reconstruction at Bonguensa
Looks like this building was getting its roof renovated. Can’t help but be reminded of earthquake damage though!
Doors of Jinyeomun Gate
Massive doors of Jinyeomun Gate, painted with (I’m guessing) the Four Heavenly Kings.
Bongeunsa Temple Main Hall
Daewoongjeon (The Main Buddha Hall)
Beopwangru
Intricate carving and painting on the Beopwangru (Dharma Hall). I love the tiger at the top.
Joel and the Mireuk Daebul
The Mireuk Daebul (The Great Statue of Maitreya Buddha) is 23 metres high – the tallest stone statue in Korea.
Autumn at Bongeunsa
Autumn is a beautiful time to visit Bongeunsa.
Jongru
Jongru (The Bell Pavilion) houses 4 sound instruments, sounded to save all beings: The Dharma Drum for beings in animal form on the ground, the Cloud-shaped Gong for beings in the air, the Wooden Fish for beings in the water, and the Dharma Bell for beings in hell under the ground and heaven. I would love to see them in action because I couldn’t work out how the Wooden Fish made sound. This building must be recently rebuilt as I could still smell the timber.
Jongru Bell Pavilion
There are many gorgeous trained trees all around the temple.
The Statue of Yeonji Gwanseum Bosal
The Statue of Yeonji Gwanseum Bosal surrounded by a lotus pond.
Rock stacks and the Statue
Found some cute little rock stacks at Bongeunsa.
